MISSION

Community Development professionally serves Shoalhaven City Council and the Community to connect them in  a positive way with a continued commitment to build vibrant communities

VISION

Through professional leadership, diverse Community views are sought and valued and implemented in developing plans and projects for the future.

Shoalhaven’s Community Development Team work in the following areas:

Shoalhaven Home and Community Care Forum

Home and Community Care Services (HACC) support frail and or socially isolated older people or people with disabilities so they can continue living in their own homes and Communities. HACC services also provide assistance to those who care for frail older people or people with disabilities at home. The Shoalhaven Home and Community Care Forum is made up of representatives from these services. The function is to provide information to service deliverers, carers and consumers on relevant issues. The forum provides a focus for the exchange of information and ideas, and for visiting Government Representatives. It is part of a network of forums throughout the Region and State. Resources:

Disabilities

Shoalhaven City Council actively supports people with disabilities and their carers. Following are some activities and initiatives occurring in the Shoalhaven:

International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated each year on 3rd December

The Shoalhaven Disability Forum meets bi monthly and the Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay Aboriginal and Disability Services Forum meet bi-monthly  The Forums discuss issues of relevance to service providers, consumers and the community;

The Disability Services Directory provides information on a range of services for people with disabilities. The directory is updated and published on a regular basis:

The Access Advisory Committee provides feedback and advice to Shoalhaven City Council on issues relating to mobility.

Seniors

Shoalhaven City Council provides a range of printed information for Seniors. Included in this is information regarding services for Seniors and the range of activities that may be of interest for Seniors.

The Community Development Officer, Ageing and Disability, co-ordinates activities for Seniors Week each year.

Youth

The Youth Development Officer is involved in planning and facilitating the development of youth services, facilities and activities, assessing the needs of young people and services, promoting the participation of young people and showcasing their achievements. Annual activities include:

Youth Week and Celebration Youth Festival
Planning days and forums
Youth Arts Projects
Support interagency and collaborative approaches
Supporting music events, skate comps and other youth entertainment.

Shoalhaven Youth Advisory Committee

The Shoalhaven Youth Advisory Committee aims to provide young people with an avenue to voice their beliefs and concerns, to demonstrate their worth as a part of the community, and in doing so provide experience in Local Government and Community affairs.

Children

The Community Development Officer – Generalist is involved in identifying the needs, issues and concerns of Children and Families in the Shoalhaven and may be of assistance in providing information and referrals to Children’s Services in the area.

Council supports a number of Children’s Services groups in the area and sponsors “Purple Ribbon Month” which aims to break the silence surrounding child abuse.

Family Day Care

This is an alternative to centre based care. Children are cared for in the homes of registered carers. Offices are in Nowra and Ulladulla.

The carers nurture and develop each child's learning potential in small group settings, and cater for children from birth to twelve years.

Parents can make flexible arrangements for full, part-time, occasional or after-school care, including vacation care.

Community Builders

The Community Builders Grant program is a State funded Community scheme made available to non-government organisations for projects that improve community well being and how communities function.

The Community Builders funding round opens in August each year.

The Community Worker – Generalist is involved in a number of projects that look at the different needs and issues of women in our Community and in developing strategies to meet these needs.

Multicultural

Shoalhaven Council is committed to ensuring the rights of all our Community to enjoy equal rights and be treated with equal respect, regardless of colour, race, gender, ethnicity, creed or religion. Shoalhaven Council has produced a Local Ethnic Affairs Policy Statement an Access and Equity plan for People from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds.

General Community

The Community Development Officer  – Generalist  works with a number of Generalist Community Services and supports the following Interagency groups:- The purpose of these groups are for service providers to share information and discuss issues of concern in the Community and where possible, develop strategies or programs to meet the Community’s needs.

Aboriginal

The Aboriginal Community Development Officers’ role is to identify needs, in consultation with the Aboriginal Community, and then develop and promote programs and services to meet these needs. It is also to provide Indigenous perspective and advice in the establishment of new Community Services in the Shoalhaven area.

Community Safety

Safer Community Action Team (SCAT) is a partnership between Community, Police, Local Government, Industry and Business to increase Community safety, reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime in the Shoalhaven.

This partnership has produced the Shoalhaven Crime Prevention Plan and is currently working on the Nowra CBD CCTV project.

A Community Partnerships meeting monthly is attended by Shoalhaven City Council, Police, Local Business, and other Government Agencies. This meeting focuses on current safety and crime prevention issues in the Shoalhaven

Women’s Rest Centre

Council operates the Women's Rest Centre in Stewart Place car park Nowra, adjacent to the bus terminus, for the convenience of residents and visitors to our City. The centre provides space for baby feeding and change space, toilet facilities and allows older people to rest in comfort while waiting for transport.

Community Plan

The Shoalhaven Community Plan has been developed in response to the Government (General) Amendment (Community and Social Plans) Regulation 1998, which requires all Councils to develop a Social/Community plan.
