Upper Kangaroo River Road - Repair Work & Major Landslips (4)

The Shoalhaven was declared a Natural Disaster Area 5 March 2022 after an East Coast Low and rain events. This had a major impact on Kangaroo Valley and surrounding communities, with landslips affecting roads and property. Upper Kangaroo River Road was severely impacted by these rain events.

Councils' Roads Unit will repair sections of road from Monday 9 September through to Wednesday 18 September 2024, Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm daily, weather permitting.

This project was part of the Major Landslip Package 2022, delivery of 38 fully remediated landslips across 15 roads, with final completion November 2024. Council thanks residents for their patience and understanding through the delivery of this critical project.

This project was jointly funded by the Australian Government and NSW Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. 

2024 Works history

12/3/2024 - Announcement: Major landslip repair works are completed on Upper Kangaroo River Road. Guardrail installation works are also completed on Upper Kangaroo River Road. Note: The overall guardrail installation project is complete; however, this is pending a Road Safety Audit that is due by the end of March 2024.

14/2/2024 to 20/2/2024 - Announcement: Major landslip repair works are completed. Expected completion of extended landslip area at Site 3 is Wednesday 14 February 2024. Guardrail (crash barrier) installation works are near completion. See more details: About the works. Council appreciates your patience and extends good will for a safe 2024.

2023 Works History

  • 09/08/2023 to 22/12/2023 – The updated three-week Lookahead program was released each week by contractor, Symal, and published on this page by council weekly, under ‘Related Information’. Repair works progress and road closures were also detailed weekly for all sites under ‘About the works’.

  • 08/08/2023 - Work has now also commenced at landslip repair site after Flat Rock.

  • 04/08/2023 - Work on the second landslip (at rural address 691) and the third landslip (at rural address 755) will commence early September and continue until late September. In both locations, single lane contra traffic flow under traffic lights will operate 24/7. Work on the very last landslip (at rural address 1291) will commence earlier, in mid-August but will require full road closure affecting a small number of residents. Full road closure will be in place at this location Monday to Fridays 7:30am - 4:30pm. Council will be contacting affected residents directly to explain the road closure details, noting that a mid-day opening will not be possible.

  • 24/07/2023 - First landslip site DM00583: 30 reinforced concrete piles drilled, socketed 1m into rock, steel reinforcing fixed, and concrete placed to date. Works going well.

  • 28/04/2023 - Preliminary construction work activities on Upper Kangaroo River Rd commences Monday 1 May. Refer to look-ahead program under Related Documents.

  • 21/04/2023 - Two week look-ahead construction program added to Related Documents, confirming work along Upper Kangaroo River Road planned commencement 1 May 2023.

  • 12/04/2023 - Due to delays in the procurement and delivery of special hot rolled steel channel product from the Whyalla Steelworks, the commencement date for landslip repair work along Upper Kangaroo River Road will be delayed by two weeks. Repair work will now commence on Monday 1 May. Completion date for Upper Kangaroo River Road and the proposed commencement dates on all other roads remain unchanged.

  • 30/03/2023 - Landslip repair drop-in sessions on Thursday 30 March 4:00pm – 5:00pm and Thursday 13 April 4:00pm – 5:00pm. Drop by the Kangaroo Valley Hall (177 Moss Vale Rd) where Symal and Council will answer your questions about upcoming roadworks.

  • 30/03/2023 - Landslip design plan for Upper Kangaroo River Road is attached. Located under Related Information.

  • 17/03/2023 - Kangaroo Valley Information Session on Friday 17 March, 7:00pm - 8:00pm (followed by BBQ) at Kangaroo Valley Community Hall. Meet contractor Symal and get briefing on the start of landslip works.

  • 04/03/2023 - The latest construction program proposed by contractor Symal for the 38 the Major Landslip repair work has been released. The construction program lists the planned start and finish date for each of the 38 land slips. A summary of the construction program is available on the  Major Landslip Package Planned Program of Work. A copy of the construction program is also available on the right-hand side of the Master Project Page in the Related Documents section.

  • 15/02/2023 - Contract awarded - Council has resolved to proceed with the appointment of infrastructure and construction group Symal to repair the 38 major landslips. Council has provided Symal a schedule of works which prioritises the most urgent landslips with the first round of works to begin in late March 2023.   • 02/02/2023 - Road closed. Drainage clean-out works planned for 13 - 14 February 2023. Road will be under traffic control between 7:00am and 4:00pm. Access will given every hour (on the half hour, e.g. 7:30am) for 10 minutes to facilitate traffic flow.

Guardrail installation completed

Guardrail installation completed at: Site 1: 1st bridge from Moss Vale Rd: Barrengarry Creek bridge. Site 2: 2.6kms to 4.2Kms from Moss Vale Rd. Site3: Landslip Site 1 near rural address 676 and Site 2 near rural address 1291 February 2024. For further information contact: Leon McCarthy - Engineer on 1300 293 111
