Flooding happens when water inundates land that is normally dry. Some reasons this can happen include:
- Heavy rains
- Overflowing rivers
- Broken dams
- Urban drainage basins
- Storm surges and tsunamis
- Rapid melting of snow or ice

Bureau of Meteorology
You can monitor flood levels of major waterways by visiting the Bureau of Meteorology website.
The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia’s national weather, climate and water agency. The Bureau provides forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice on rainfall and flooding.
Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (MHL)
Shoalhaven City Council has worked with MHL to create a new comprehensive public web portal.
The website provides near real time rainfall and river and lake water level data from throughout the Shoalhaven City Council catchments, features include:

- Water level summary
- Rainfall summary
