Shoalhaven City Council has engaged Cardno to assist with the preparation of the Broughton Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan.
The purpose of the Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is to identify and recommend appropriate actions to manage flood risks in the Broughton Creek Catchment.
One option identified was the provision of stock mounds for rural properties. These mounds would be constructed of
imported fill, and would provide a flood refuge for stock and equipment during large flood events.
Council is currently further investigating this option. These investigations will involve consultation with stakeholders including property owners, government agencies such as the NSW Department of Primary industries, Catchment Management Authorities and the Office of Environment and Heritage, in order to determine the feasibility of this option.
The first stage of this process was to contact property owners to determine the level of interest in adopting the stock mound flood mitigation option and to provide an indication of what mounds will be required to deliver to property owners in order to be useful.
Further consultation will continue in the coming months involving agency representatives and further contact with property owners.
