All bulk liquids need to be stored in a way that prevents them from accidentally ending up in our stormwater system and rivers. Environmental Health Officers inspect industrial premises and workshops to provide advice on bunding and containment of any such liquids and check to ensure that no products are entering the stormwater drains other that water.
Even chemicals that we may use every day, such as chlorine in swimming pools, may have severe consequences on natural systems. In large volumes or high concentrations such chemicals become toxic to the environment and may cause significant harm to natural systems. Therefore the storage of any chemical needs to be considered.
If you have any concerns about chemicals you are storing or have observed something that may do harm to the environment contact your local Environmental Health Officer on (02) 4429 3453.
