Skin penetration procedures include any of the following:
- ear piercing
- hair removal
- any other procedure (whether medical or not) that involves skin penetration such as body piercing, hair removal using wax or electrolysis, cosmetic enhancement and semi-permanent make-up, and any beauty treatment which involves the deliberate penetration or removal of the skin.
- any other procedure prescribed by the regulations (which now includes colonic lavage)
Note - this does not include procedures performed in the practice of a registered medical practitioner.
Hairdressing and other body decorating and grooming practices which do not intentionally pierce the skin are not considered skin penetration procedures, however Council audit these businesses to ensure adequate procedures for maintaining public health are being employed.
All skin penetration, hairdressing or other body decorating/grooming businesses must be registered with Council. Council's Environmental Health Officers conduct routine health inspections of skin penetration premises, and investigate complaints regarding such premises.
