Never place mobile phones into either kerbside bin as they contain substances hazardous to the environment. Mobile phone batteries can ignite and burn if they are placed under pressure and are one of the primary causes of fire in recycling facilities and collection vehicles.

How/where to dispose of it

Mobile phones are electronic waste. Recycle via Council's recycling and waste depots 

Will it cost anything to get rid of?

No.

What happens to it after we receive it?

Mobile phones are sent to specialist recyclers where it undergoes a manual dismantling process. Individual materials such as plastics, metals, glass are recovered and processed to be recycled into new products.
