Green Ceramics MICROfactorie™

What are green ceramics?

Green ceramics are a new generation of high-performance, non-toxic, engineered composites, for use in various architectural and decorative applications, including furniture and ceramic tiles.

Green ceramic products are typically made from the types of waste glass and textiles that are difficult to recycle using traditional methods.

How does the MICROfactorieTM work?

The MICROfactorieTM is a collaboration between Shoalhaven City Council, The UNSW SMaRT Centre and Kandui Industries.

The UNSW SMaRT Centre is a leading national research centre, that works in collaboration with industry, to ensure new recycling science is translated into real-world environmental and economic benefits.

The MICROfactorie™ constructed at the Shoalhaven City Council's West Nowra Recycling Precinct, processes waste materials such as plastic, glass, textiles and mattresses into ‘green ceramics’.

Glass, which is the core ingredient for green ceramic products, comes from Counci's glass recycling plant.

UNSW SMaRT Centre’s licensee Kandui Technologies manages the operations and product sales and distribution. Approximately 147,000 kg of green ceramic products are manufactured via the MICROfactorie™ annually.
