Rubber Crumb Recycling Plant
About the project
The region's first rubber crumb plant is located in West Nowra.
Council received a $514,000 grant, co-funded by the Federal Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) and NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.
This funding enabled the commissioning of machinery required for processing tyres.
Tyres have notoriously been difficult items to recycle. Now we can retrieve tyres and other rubber products once destined for landfill and repurpose them for use in road paving, artificial turf and soft fall for children’s playgrounds.
Our rubber crumb recycling plant removes contaminants and provides Council with an exceptionally high purity product which is attractive to the recycled products market.
The process of recycling tyres into crumbs involves pre-shredding the tyres. This material is fed into the machinery which separates the metal from the rubber. The rubber is then shredded to a crumb suitable for re-processing.
This plant has the potential to recycle 270 tonnes of rubber waste material annually.
