New homeowner's bin guide

Overview

Just bought a home in the Shoalhaven? Find out what is available to you as a ratepayer and a resident, plus how to recycle correctly within the Shoalhaven.

Starting a new bin service

Council provides a two bin kerbside collection service. A red lid bin (landfill) and a yellow lid bin (recycling). To start a new bin collection service the owner of the property must request it.

You can request a new bin service on the start a new collection service page.

Get recycling right in the Shoalhaven

What can be recycled may vary from one local government area to another. You can order our easy to follow guides to get recycling right.

The yellow lid bin guide has been written specifically for recycling options in the Shoalhaven.

The yellow lid bin fridge magnet is a handy recycling reference in the kitchen.

The recycling calendar lets you know what week your yellow lid bin goes out.

Waste vouchers

Household waste disposal vouchers are issued to eligible Shoalhaven ratepayers each year to help with the disposal of large amounts of household and garden waste at recycling and waste depots or using the green and bulky collection service.

Ratepayers receive two (2) household waste disposal vouchers and two (2) garden waste disposal vouchers with their rates notice in July.

You can learn more about waste vouchers on our page about household and garden waste vouchers.

Recycling and waste depots

Also known as 'tips', recycling and waste depots are the place to take most things that don't go in your kerbside bins.

Our depots offer a range of services to assist the community with recycling and waste disposal. Some of our depots even offer a buy-back centre that function like 'op-shops', where you can find a range of homewares, furniture, toys, bric-a-brac and more in need of a new home.

You can learn more about what we can and can't accept, what's free, what costs (if any) are involved, and other details about your local depot in the recycling and waste depots section.

Home sustainability workshops

Council hosts a number of workshops throughout the year on a range of topics from composting and worm farming, to sustainable household alternatives like beeswax wraps and furoshiki.

Check out our page on home sustainability workshops for more information, and subscribe to our ReNewsable newsletter to be notified of upcoming workshops.
