Recycling silage wrap

Shoalhaven City Council, in partnership with Plastic Forests, is accepting silage wrap from local farmers for recycling, at no charge.

Plastic Forests recycling is separate from the REDcycle soft plastic supermarket collection program. Plastic Forests recycles primarily agricultural and post-industrial film.

Instead of this single-use packaging ending up in landfill, it can now be recycled into new plastic agricultural products such as fencing posts, square pickets and poly sheets.

Items we can accept

  • used silage wrap/film
  • polypropylene (PP) twine

Items we can't accept

  • silage mesh/netting
  • grain bags
  • mulch film
  • woven PP feed bags
  • silage film on rolls
  • PP bulka bags
  • nylon
  • polyester
  • PVC and HDPE tarpaulins (tarps)
  • multi-laminate films
  • PVDC
  • aluminium foil-lined films
  • drums
  • hard plastics

Preparing silage wrap for collection

Silage wrap can only be accepted when it is packed in a Plastic Forest UV-stable bag.

These bags can be collected from:

When packing silage wrap and twine into bags, please keep the following in mind:

  • twine and wrap must be collected in separate bags - do not mix twine and silage wrap in the same bag
  • shake off dirt and moisture before bagging - a little hay is ok, but no rocks, metal, dirt or dead animals
  • full bags must be tied off with pp twine or a cable tie (if desired) - do not use wire
  • keep silage wrap and bags dry - store them undercover if possible

Taking silage wrap to the depots

Once your bags of silage wrap and twine are ready, you can take them to one of our recycling and waste depots:

  • load bags of silage wrap/twine into your vehicle - make sure they are easily identifiable from any other part of your load
  • when at the depot gate, inform the staff of your silage wrap/twine load and follow their instructions
