Safely disposing of problem waste around the home

Overview

Household problem waste includes items that should not be placed in either your red or yellow lid kerbside bins because they contain materials that are harmful to people or the environment.

Some items if placed in kerbside bins can ignite in transport vehicles and receiving facilities creating a potentially dangerous situation for the people working in these industries.

Instead, you can take these items to the Community Recycling Centres at our recycling and waste depots to safely dispose of them for free.

What can I take to a Community Recycling Centre?

The following types of problem waste are accepted at for free, all year round at Community Recycling Centres located at Council's recycling and waste depots:

  • motor fuels
  • fluorescent (fluoro) light bulbs and tubes
  • smoke detectors
  • paint and paint-related products
  • gas bottles
  • fire extinguishers
  • car and household batteries
  • motor oils and cooking oils

Household poisons and chemicals are not accepted at our depots but can be disposed of for free at a Household Chemical Cleanout event
