Join the Aboriginal Advisory Committee

This year the Shoalhaven City Council Aboriginal Advisory Committee celebrated 21 years of making a positive contribution to the region.

Council is currently seeking two new members to join the Advisory Committee.  Membership is open to any person or organisation from the Local Aboriginal Community, including youth and elders who live in the Shoalhaven, as well as any Government or Non-Government Agencies that work with the Aboriginal Community in the Shoalhaven.

The group of dedicated volunteers meet bi-monthly to ensure that our local government works together with the local Aboriginal communities to develop a structure for effective communications and to encourage members of the local community to participate in Council’s decision-making processes.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said the Aboriginal Advisory Committee has long been the unsung heroes when it comes to building stronger links and working relationships between Council and Aboriginal communities in the Shoalhaven.

“This important group has worked hard for 21 years to foster solid working relationships between government and the local Aboriginal Community and they are now looking for two new members to bring new ideas to the table,” Cr Findley said.

“Twenty-one in many cultures signifies a coming of age, however, this committee has long shown their maturity in collaborating with Council on the issues that are important and valuable to their community.

“One of the first initiatives of the Committee in 1997, was the successful advocacy for the employment of an Aboriginal Community Development Officer and they are currently working towards a strategic action plan.”

Applications close Wednesday, 4 July 2018 and inquiries are welcome to call Margaret Simoes on 4429 3440 or email
