Bushfire Waste

Prior to removing waste in bushfire affected areas residents are reminded:

  • Building waste generated by a bushfire often contains contaminated material like asbestos. A damage assessment must be undertaken.
  • To ensure their insurers are advised and have conducted their assessment and approved waste removal.
  • No asbestos is to be handled by unqualified people to ensure their and the community’s safety
  • Council has been advised that Public Works are co-ordinating the removal of waste for uninsured owners – contact Public Works Advisory 1800 885 539
  • Insurance Companies are funding or co-ordinating the removal of waste for insured owners

To assist residents during this bushfire crisis the following concessions to the normal fees & charges structure, are provided to the cost of disposing Bushfire generated waste in the Shoalhaven;

Bushfire generated waste is waste that has been burnt or damaged by smoke and/or water as a result of the current Bushfire crisis.

  • The waste levy from the NSW government has been removed from the Council’s Waste fees & charges that are applied to Bushfire generated waste and this has effectively halved the cost of disposal of Bushfire generated waste. Note Waste not directly generated by the Bushfire will attract the normal fees and charges.
  • As an extra special measure for the disposal of large volumes of demolition material from an uninsured house, waste disposal costs may be reimbursed. An application for reimbursement must be made via a legally binding Waste Disposal Fee Waiver Request Statutory Declaration:
  • Online
  • Enables free disposal if provided to the Depot staff on arrival
  • At Depot Gatehouse
  • Fees must be paid
  • Declaration form to claim a refund provided at the gatehouse for completion and submission to Council after the customer leaves the waste site
  • Reminder: Items such as steel, electric goods and white goods that are not contaminated and can be separated, i.e. not mixed with other waste, can be placed in recycling piles at the waste facility free of charge.

In addition to the above, all green waste (whether bushfire generated or not) can be disposed of free of charge at any Council facility until the close of business on Friday 31 January 2020.

Asbestos Waste

In accordance with safe work practice and licencing provisions, asbestos waste can only be received by Council as follows;

  • West Nowra (small hand loadable loads and large loads)
  • Ulladulla (small hand loadable loads ONLY)
  • Large loads must be booked in advance

Council’s  “Asbestos Safe Disposal Guide” is full of useful information and can be found at: https://shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/Environment/Waste-and-recycling

Council cannot accept asbestos material (properly bagged or otherwise) at our smaller transfer stations and cannot accept large asbestos loads at Ulladulla.

If the depot operator considers that there is a potential for asbestos to be in a load taken to a small transfer station (i.e. Lake Conjola) or large load taken to Ulladulla the customer will be advised on how to dispose of the load.

Illegal dumping of asbestos is a very serious matter.
