Companion animals

NSW legislation covers the responsibilities of the owners of companion animals, such as cats and dogs. The aim is to protect the rights of animals and their owners and consider the rights and needs of others in the community.

Key topics included in the Companion Animals Act:
  • compulsory microchipping and lifetime registration of pets
  • dog attacks and aggressive dogs
  • dangerous dogs
  • restricted breeds
  • nuisance dogs
  • nuisance cats
  • seized dogs and cats - pound information
  • dog defecation 
To support this legislation, Council has a Companion Animals Policy.
