Feedback sought on how best to honour Margie Sheedy
Published on 04 March 2025
Consultation has begun on a fitting tribute for local Ulladulla icon Margaret ‘Margie’ Sheedy who passed away in March last year.
The recipient of an Order of Australia for service to the community, Margie is widely celebrated for her tireless fundraising and her passionate support for both local theatre and the Ulladulla Sea Pool.
Following a resolution of Council in June 2024, public consultation is now being sought on a suitable memorial, with several options proposed.
“Margie was a vibrant and colourful member of the Milton Ulladulla community who deserves to be recognised for her significant contribution and legacy,” Mayor Patricia White said.
“With very few recreational places named after inspirational women in the Shoalhaven, it’s fitting that we ensure Margie is honoured and remembered in a meaningful way,” she said.
“Margie was a fierce supporter and regular fixture at the Ulladulla Sea Pool so options being discussed relate to the pool area and nearby reserve.”
The community will be asked to consider the following options:
Option 1: As per the Council resolution, re-name the Ulladulla Sea Pool to the Margie Sheedy Sea Pool. Noting this option may be subject to constraints, as the Ulladulla Sea Pool is already widely used.
Option 2: Name the currently un-named grass reserve next to the Ulladulla Sea Pool the Margie Sheedy Reserve.
Option 3: As per Council resolution, install a suitable memorial near the pool in the form of a plaque or a bench seat.
Once the survey results are known, Council may need to consult with local emergency services and the Geographical Names Board which is the NSW Government’s authority to assign names.
The engagement team will also continue to work closely with the Sheedy family who will be asked to provide their input on the final proposal based on community feedback and coordination with relevant stakeholders.
Head to Council’s Get Involved platform to fill out the survey by 5pm Tuesday 1 April 2025.
