In the wake of significant challenges around the region’s growth and housing supply, Council has drafted a set of guiding principles that will help shape development and future land use.

The proposed Strategic Growth Principles includes 10 statements to help address housing supply, diversity, and affordability, along with the efficient use of infrastructure, protecting biodiversity resources, and avoiding natural hazards.

Mayor Amanda Findley invited the community to have their say on the principles that will influence decision making for many years to come.

“A nation-wide housing shortage has put the spotlight on what all levels of government are doing to address the housing needs of the community,” Cr Findley said.

“When it comes to how we develop and use our land in the Shoalhaven, it’s critical Council is guided by contemporary, responsible and enduring policy statements to inform long-term direction,” she said.

“The Strategic Growth Principles aims to ensure new land use planning, rezoning and planning proposals are factored alongside environmental considerations to meet the needs of the community.”

The 10 principles have been informed by Council’s consideration of the significant change experienced over recent years, current and emerging land use planning challenges, and to address historic planning decisions. They also consider community feedback provided in response to earlier exhibitions of corporate and strategic planning documents.

After an engagement and feedback process, the final Strategic Growth Principles will be embedded into a revised version of Shoalhaven 2040 - Our Local Strategic Planning Statement which is Council’s adopted Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS). The LSPS is a high-level strategic land use planning document which sets out the work Council will do to identify and meet the communities land use needs over the next 20 years.

The principles can be viewed on Council’s Get Involved site. People can have their say until 5pm 12 July 2024.
