People with a strong connection to the Conjola community can now apply to join a local working group which will help to create a meaningful memorial that commemorates the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20.

The Conjola Memorial Project Working Group will guide the process including decision-making on the location and design, through to helping with community events.

Mayor Patricia White said members would be chosen based on their skills, experience and connection to the community.

“The people of Conjola and surrounding areas have shown incredible resilience and strength since the fires ripped through the area and it’s this lived experience and community spirit that we are looking for in the working group,” Cr White said.

“We’d love to see a cross-section of the community join the group so if you know people who are collaborative and have availability to participate, please encourage them to apply,” she said.

“The working group is absolutely pivotal to creating a memorial that reflects the community's experiences and supports ongoing healing and recovery.”

An information session will be held on 12 February for people who want to talk to the project team about the application process.

Applicants have until Monday 3 March to fill out the expression of interest form.

Once the working group has been established, community engagement will begin to identify the purpose and objectives for the memorial. The community can expect interactive sessions, focus groups and surveys to establish what this memorial should represent. Donations were received by the community immediately after the fires and the working group will consider options for the use of these donations for the memorial.

A fact sheet on the project stages, the expression of interest form and details about the information session can now be found on Council’s Get Involved project page. The community is encouraged to subscribe for updates as the project progresses.
