Milton to Host First Online Steer Judging Competition
Published on 07 May 2020
Four Shoalhaven schools will participate in South Coast Beef School’s first online hoof and hook judging event, live-streamed from Milton District Meats via FaceBook on Thursday 7 May.
Teachers and students from 13 NSW schools will be able to see their animals being judged. With 26 steers entered by schools including Bomaderry High, Nowra High, Shoalhaven High and one student from Vincentia High School.
Shoalhaven City Council is proud to see the event continuing in the current environment, with Council’s Economic Development Office being a long-time sponsor for the Steer Spectacular. The event encourages agribusiness and the inclusion of Agricultural Studies as an HS subject in our local schools.
Carcass judging will also be live-streamed on Saturday 9 May, followed by an award presentation. Winners will receive cash prizes and ribbons for each category.
Due to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, five schools are unable to compete this year. All the main arena activities have been cancelled, including the event at the Nowra Showground, but the competition is still alive as schools and students continue working with their animals, feeding, grooming and leading, to present the best possible steers for judging.
Some of the schools with students attending are still working with the animals, while others are viewing their animals through online training methods.
