Recommendation to refuse Berry Hotel expansion proposal

Council is recommending refusal of a development application for alterations and additions to Berry Hotel.

The application submitted includes new accommodation, car parking and landscaping encompassing four additional land lots and proposed an access way via a Council-owned car park.

Council is responsible for assessment of the proposal and making a formal recommendation to the Southern Regional Planning Panel (SRPP) which will make the final determination. 

A report to next week’s Council meeting outlines that the proposal did not adequately address a number of planning controls, including heritage conservation, building height, car parking allocation and adverse impact on the surrounding location.

“The proposal has been thoroughly evaluated against the relevant planning controls for that site as is necessary for a proposal of this scale,” said Director City Development, James Ruprai.

“We are confident that our independent consultants have conducted a comprehensive assessment process taking into consideration all the potential social and environmental aspects of this project,” Mr Ruprai said.

More than 370 submissions were received for the regionally significant application that will be determined by the SRPP on 26 June.

The report is available on Council’s website and will be considered at its Ordinary Meeting on Monday 24 June.
