WaterNSW has lifted the red alert warning for the Shoalhaven River from the boat ramp near Nowra Bridge downstream to the mouth of the river following two consecutive results below red alert levels.

Recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing, canoeing are now permitted in this area.

The previous red alert warning was due to the detection of Alexandrium minutum, which can produce harmful toxins and carries the risk of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.

While the risk of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning in the area is now reduced, the recreational collection of shellfish always carries risk and is not encouraged.

As algal numbers can change dramatically with changes in conditions, water users should avoid areas of discoloured water or where surface scums are evident.

Water users should exercise caution at all times before entering a water body and be aware that the algal situation can change quickly.

Marine and estuarine blooms are naturally occurring and can reproduce quickly when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients.
